28th North Devon Performing Arts Festival kicks off
with record number of entries in the Dance Classes
This weekend saw the start of the 28th North Devon Performing Arts Festival which kicked off with the Dance classes being held over 3 days at the Kingsley School Theatre in Bideford. A record number of entries were received from Dance Schools throughout the Southwest as far as Weymouth. Competitors performed a variety of around 440 dazzling dances and all styles were showcased from the very youngest of only 3 years old and stepping out for the first time to the older highly accomplished, talented older dancers. The Adjudicator, Linda Young, was impressed by the extremely high standard and polished performances given and our local Dance Schools again did well against stiff competition from away. Soloists Charlotte Redman, Jade Bayliss and Rosalie Garnett from Westcott Dance & Performing Arts scooped 7 firsts between them as well as the School’s groups winning a further 3 categories. The Lindsay Ballet Studios group won the Open Contemporary Group category and soloists Kaia China-Sawyer, Olivia Riley and Hannah Smith won their classes. Dancing Feet Academy of Dance did well in the Group Cabaret section by either winning or coming second in every class they entered.

North Devon Performing Arts Festival Instrumental & Vocal Classes
draw largest entries in recent years
This year has seen yet another increase in entries for the Music classes with around 650 performances from entrants throughout the whole of Devon. The instrumental section began on Sunday 15th November at West Buckland School Memorial Hall with novice first time performers, guitars, jazz piano, family, folk and own composition classes followed by 2 days of piano, strings, woodwind, brass and chamber music. International adjudicator Helen Deakin, now based in South Devon, commented on the many fine performances and gave marks of distinction given to several young people – she also praised the excellent tuition from our local teachers.
Overall instrumental awards went to violinist Ana Fernandez for the most promising musician 18 years & under, pianist Zoe Bodinetz for most promising musician 12 years and under and singer/songwriter Bethan Waters who gained the highest mark in the instrumental classes for both folk music making and own composition.
The pinnacle of these classes was the Young Musician of the Year Competition held in the evening of Tuesday 17th. Helen Deakin and vocal adjudicator Robert Latham co-judged the 8 talented youngsters who competed with pianos, flute and voices – 1st prize of £200 went to pianist Bery Chan for an exceptional performance of Beethoven’s Sonata in C minor and Debussy’s Prelude no: 4; 2nd prize of £100 went to singer Ana Fernandez whilst 3rd prize of £75 went to flautist Mathew Leong.
On Wednesday 18th the competition moved on to Kingsley School Theatre for 3 days of vocal classes with Robert Latham from Bristol adjudicating. Entrants of all ages performed as soloists, duets, trios and choirs in a wide range of different styles which included classical, folk, musical theatre, opera, lieder and popular music. The standard was high and Robert Latham commended local singing teachers for the standard achieved with many performances securing marks in the commended and distinction category – however Bethan Waters was the only singer to gain a mark in the outstanding category for her show song “Vanilla Ice Cream.” There were many endearing performances from the younger singers such as Ella Clifton’s “Favourite Things”, Timothy Parker’s “Three Bears”, Sam Cumming’s “Where is love” and Stan Whittaker’s “Who will buy”. The classes concluded with a Master Class for adults and young singers where individuals had the opportunity to work on their technique under the expert guidance of Robert Latham.
Overall vocal awards this year went to Kathryn Turnbull (Most Promising Singer 18 years & under), Jed Kerby (Most Promising Singer 12 years & under) Rachel Forbes (Most Promising Adult Singer), and Overall Duet to Kathryn Turnbull & Victoria Cutting.
